Enabling Personal Ratings

Collection sync not enabled

If you don’t have Collection sync with BoardGameGeek (BGG) enabled, ratings are automatically enabled for you.

Collection sync enabled

If you do have Collection sync with BoardGameGeek (BGG) enabled, your collection in the app needs to be updated once, to download all your existing ratings from BGG. Before this is done, you must choose how BG Stats handles adding games to the app during collection sync with BGG.

Up till now, collection sync would only add games to your app if you gave it a collection status (like Owned, Wishlist, etc.) on BGG. Because you can rate games without giving it a collection status, BG Stats can now also add games to the app if you just give it a rating, or any other information on BGG (like comments, private details, etc.), without giving it a collection status.

You need to choose how you want BG Stats to handle your games during Collection Sync:

• Use BGG collection: adds all games to the app that are in your BGG Collection but not in BG Stats
  This includes games you rated, commented on, or have other collection info for like purchase cost, private comments or other private data.
  
  This is the recommended setting, to make sure games you rate on BGG will automatically appear in BG Stats too.
  
• Use BG Stats collection: this does not add any games to the app
  Games will only be added during BGG sync if they have a Collection status. Games that are in your BGG Collection only because you rated them or commented on them will not appear in BG Stats automatically.
  
  This is the original behavior of Collection sync. Only existing games in the app will be updated with your ratings from BGG.

If you’re not sure yet or want to start this process later, you can tap ‘Later’ to hide the screen. Ratings will not be enabled until you come back to it. You can re-open this screen by tapping the banner that appears on the Overview screen in the app.

After selecting your preferred option, tap “Start Update” on the screen to let BG Stats update your collection with your existing ratings from BGG. If you chose the first option, all games you have information for on BGG but not yet in BG Stats will be added to the app at this point.

After starting the update, which can sometimes take a while, you can close the Personal Ratings screen and use the app as usual. Any changes you make to your collection will be synced after the update is complete. When the update is complete you will get a message in a popup. The banner on the Overview screen will also display the current status of the update.

Changing settings later

You can always change the way BG Stats handles adding games in the Collection sync settings later. When ratings are enabled, the option “Limit adding Games to the app” appears on the Collection sync settings screen. When this option is ON, games are only added to the app if they have a collection status (equivalent to the option “Use BG Stats collection” above).

To switch from “Use BG Stats collection” to “Use BGG collection”: turn the “Limit adding Games to the app” switch OFF. From now on, games you rate on BGG will automatically be added to BG Stats during collection sync, whether they have a collection status or not. If you want to import all games you already have rated on BGG but not yet in the app, tap the “Check for Changes” button now to do a full sync with the new setting.

To switch from “Use BGG collection” to “Use BG Stats collection”: turn the “Limit adding Games to the app” switch ON. From now on, games you rate on BGG will only be added to BG Stats if they also have a collection status. Games that are already in BG Stats will never be removed automatically, even if they have no collection status and this setting is on. Their collection info will be synced as long as they are in the app. The setting only influences when new games are added to the app.

Please note that when you delete a game from BG Stats, and have collection sync enabled, the collection info for that game will be deleted from BGG too.
