Did you encounter a problem with BG Stats? Please check below to see if an existing solution is available. Otherwise, please contact me. I sincerely hope the information on this page will help you recover!

Startup crashes and stuck screens

Although I ironed out most of the problems, it might occur that your BG Stats app does not start anymore, keeps being stuck at a certain screen, or something else prevents it from working correctly.

Please try the following:

  • Make sure you’ve updated Board Game Stats to the latest version.
  • Try restarting the app: on iOS double press the Home button and close the app by swiping it up (iOS 8+), on Android press the App switch button, and swipe the app to the left.
  • Try restarting your device. If your problems have anything to do with memory pressure on the device, this will help.
  • Try resetting your saved state (iOS only)
  • If your problem persists, please contact me.
  • If I couldn’t help you (or only with a future update, which you don’t want to wait for), you will most probably have to reinstall the app by deleting it and redownloading it (for free) from the App store.
  • But first, make sure you have a copy of your data!

Getting a backup

Are your problems so severe that the app cannot start, and you do no have a recent export/backup of your data and are not using Cloud sync to backup your data? You CAN get a copy of your data out of there before you delete and reinstall the app (which always solves all problems). Of course, regularly creating a export of your plays is recommended (you can do this from the Settings).

You can try to Create an export when opening the app (iOS only), or Create a backup of your files via iTunes (iOS only).

Contacting me

You can contact me several ways. Please provide me with a detailed description of how and when your problem occurs. If you experience crashes, please provide a Crash report.

Sending a Crash report

If you have enabled (opted in to) sending crash reports to developers, I will receive your crash logs automatically.

  • On iOS (10): In your device’s Settings, go to Privacy > Analysis and enable ‘Share iPhone analysis’.
  • On Android: Open your device’s Settings app. Under “Personal,” tap Google More. Tap Usage & diagnostics. Tap the On/Off switch.

You can provide me manually with a crash-log for detailed analysis, via these steps on iOS:

  1. Go to the Settings app on your device
  2. Browse to Privacy & Security => Analytics & Improvements => Analytics data
  3. Find and open an entry named “Board Game Stats-” followed by the crash date and time, or “LatestCrash-Board Game Stats.ips”
  4. Use the export icon on the top right to send the crashfile to us.

Resetting your Saved state (iOS only)

Sometimes the app always opens on a screen you’re stuck on, because it tries to remember what you were doing last when you closed it. You can ask the app no to try this the next time it starts with the following steps:

  1. Open the Settings app on your phone (not those within BG Stats, but on your device’s home screen).
  2. Scroll all the way down to the app-specific settings, and click on BG Stats.
  3. Flick the switch named ‘Reset saved state on next start’ to ON.
  4. Make sure BG Stats is no longer running, by force-quitting the app (double press the Home button and close the app).
  5. Start BG Stats. It should present you with the Overview tab.
  6. If you want to check if BG Stats used this one-time setting, you can go back to the Settings app; if the switch is now off again, BG Stats did read and use it.

Let BG Stats try to export your plays

You can always export your plays in the app via the Settings-screen in the app.

If your app is stuck or won’t launch, you can try to enforce this on iOS doing the following: You can ask BG Stats to immediately open its in-app settings screen with the export options when it opens, so as to prevent other problems from occurring first. That way, you can make an export of your Plays by mailing it to yourself of saving it on DropBox or some other external service, before reinstalling the app.

Note: the export option only exports Plays and some Player, Game and Location details, it does not save any images (of Players, Games, or photos added to a Play).

  1. Open the Settings app on your phone (not those within BG Stats, but on your device’s home screen).
  2. Scroll all the way down to the app-specific settings, and click on BG Stats.
  3. Flick the switch named ‘Open Settings on next open’ to ON.
  4. Make sure BG Stats is no longer running, by force-quitting the app (double press the Home button and close the app).
  5. Start BG Stats. It should present you with the in-app Settings screen. In there, choose either ‘Mail or share Export…’ or ‘Export to other app…’ to export your Plays (in the Export and Backup submenu).

If you did not get to the Settings screen you can get a copy of your data via iTunes.

Grab a copy of your data via iTunes (iOS only)

Board Game Stats is iTunes-document sharing enabled, which means you can get to your files via your computer by connecting your device. You don’t have to sync your phone to iTunes for this.

  1. Connect your iOS device to your computer using a USB cable (if you have Wifi-sync set-up this might also work). If your device asks to trust the computer, confirm this (if you indeed, trust your computer).
  2. Open iTunes if it did not start automatically by connecting your device.
  3. Click on your devices icon in iTunes, so that its overview screen appears. Remember, you don’t have to sync or change anything in your settings.
  4. Choose ‘File sharing’ from the menu (this is a separate item since iTunes 12.7).
  5. Click in the File sharing app listing on BG Stats. On the right part of the screen now appears a list of BG Stat’s files.
  6. Select all files except the ‘Inbox’ folder and save them to your computer, using the ‘Save’ button below the list of files.
  7. Now disconnect your device from your computer (use the eject icon before disconnecting the cable), delete BG Stats from it, and reinstall (for free) from the App store. Start BG Stats just once and force-quit it.
  8. Connect again to your computer, and follow the same steps to get to the file list for BG Stats. Now Add all the files you saved earlier on your computer, overwriting existing files, using the button below the list of files.
  9. Disconnect your device from your computer again, and start BG Stats. You should have all your data back.
